Understanding Your Thyroid Test Report (T3, T4 & TSH)

Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck that controls metabolism, energy and weight. A Thyroid Profile blood test checks how well it's working.

The three main numbers

• TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) — the "control signal" from your brain. High TSH often suggests an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism); low TSH suggests an overactive one (hyperthyroidism).
• T4 (Thyroxine) — the main hormone the thyroid produces.
• T3 (Triiodothyronine) — the active form your body uses.

When should you get tested?

Common reasons include unexplained weight change, fatigue, hair loss, feeling cold, irregular periods, or a family history of thyroid disease.

Reading your report

Each lab prints a reference range next to your value. Being slightly outside the range doesn't always mean disease — your doctor considers symptoms and may repeat the test. Never start or stop thyroid medicine on your own.
