About the CA 125; Ovarian Cancer Marker in Bareilly

Clinical significance

Elevated CA 125 levels may indicate ovarian cancer but can also be increased in benign conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, pregnancy, menstruation, liver disease, and other malignancies. Clinical correlation with imaging and other investigations is essential.

Who should take this test?

Women with suspected ovarian cancer, ovarian cysts or pelvic masses, patients undergoing ovarian cancer treatment, follow-up after surgery or chemotherapy, individuals with family history of ovarian cancer as advised by a physician.

Reference values

Normal: ≤35 U/mL. Values above 35 U/mL should always be interpreted with clinical findings and imaging studies

Critical values

No universally accepted critical value. Results >200 U/mL require urgent clinical evaluation, especially if ovarian malignancy is suspected.

What a higher value may mean

May indicate ovarian cancer, recurrence after treatment, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, pregnancy, liver disease, pancreatitis, or cancers of the endometrium, pancreas, breast, lung, or gastrointestinal tract.

What a lower value may mean

Usually considered normal and generally has no clinical significance. A normal CA 125 level does not completely rule out ovarian cancer.

Possible causes of an abnormal result

Ovarian carcinoma, endometriosis, benign ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine fibroids, pregnancy, menstruation, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, heart failure, peritonitis, and other cancers.
