Liver Function Test (LFT)
A Liver Function Test measures the enzymes, proteins and bilirubin the liver produces or clears, which together show how well the organ is working and whether its cells are inflamed or damaged. Doctors order it for jaundice, persistent fatigue, abdominal pain or swelling, before starting medicines that are processed by the liver, and to monitor hepatitis, fatty liver or alcohol-related liver disease over time. Raised enzymes point to liver cell injury, while a raised bilirubin with a low albumin points more to how well the liver is performing its work.
